The Torpoint Archives was founded in 1994 by two residents, Pat and Freda Manning, who were passionate about the local history of our town. Thus began a continuing effort to gather as many documents, photographs and artefacts as possible relating to Torpoint and the local area. The Mannings were fortunate in acquiring a large volume of research done by local historian, Jack Kingston, and soon other material donated by enthusiastic Torpointers came into their possession.
Space for the rapidly growing collection was found in the Council Chambers in Buller Road until a reorganisation resulted in the Archive being relocated in the town Library in 2019, whereupon it was renamed the Torpoint Archives and Heritage Centre (TAHC).
Advances in technology means photos and documents are now being digitalised by our team of volunteers, but there is still a considerable amount of artifacts in storage within the Council Offices in Buller Road.
The TAHC celebrated 30 years in 2024 with the Mayor of Torpoint hosting a reception in the Council chambers, where special recognition was made to Jack Kingston and Pat and Freda for having the vision to start preserving our history.
With Sir Richard Carew-Pole OBE as our President, and Mike Pearn MBE as our chairman, Our dedicated team of volunteers continue to give up their time to document records, letters, photos and mementoes of Torpoint, to ensure our heritage is preserved for generations to come.
